The “GOOD” Student

What does it mean to be a “good” student according to the common-sense?

Based on the reading to be a good student you must follow the teacher’s instructions all the time. When a teacher is telling you to do something u must do it. To be a good student you must also listen to the teacher when they are speaking. You must not talk while the teacher is talking. Also, to be a good student you must participate in class activities.

Which students are privileged by this definition of the good student?

The teachers pet. The student who always listen and always doing their work. The one that always ask questions in class. In some cases when the student is white. What I mean by that, if the teacher is racist, they would not think that the white student is bad just the black/coloured student.

What is made impossible to see/understand/believe because of these common-sense ideas?

It is impossible to see what the student’s full potential when we have this set of belief of what a “good” student should be. As teachers we need to be more open about how a student learns. We cannot judge them because all students learn differently and in different phase.
